No todos los que creen en los poderes de las piedras y minerales son unos ingenuos, sin que ello signifique que haya que creer necesariamente en lo que no se ha demostrado científicamente. Igual que se estudia la mitología antigua, o el Zodiaco, podemos familiarizarnos críticamente con las creencias y supersticiones sobre los más fascinantes objetos de la Naturaleza.

La palabra "gemosofía" debo atribuírsela a Tomás Torrens, que con su habitual ingenio y sus amplios conocimientos gemológicos,  me ha regalado inteligentes y curiosas observaciones sobre el mundo de las piedras preciosas.

Durante más de un año he estado buscando referencias bibliográficas sobre los poderes de las gemas, pero excluyendo y renunciando a cualquier sectarismo iniciático sociopático. Probablemente la más interesante obra sea "Amuletos y Talismanes", de Hans Krofer, que define como amuletos a "ciertos objetos que por superstición, o por fe, los seres humanos llevan encima de sí, bien en un bolsillo o colgados del cuello, con el fin, y por su creencia en sus mágicas propiedades, de preservarse de cualquier enfermedad o peligro indeterminado", y como talisman "un trozo de piedra o de metal, al que se atribuye un determinado poder". Para que obren su efecto talismánico han de ser necesariamente grabados y consagrados en determinados días de la semana. Una vez consagrados, son objetos mágicos que poseen virtudes maravillosas. Deben estar hechos, impresos, grabados o cincelados sobre una piedra, metal u otro material, y han de llevar el sello de un signo celeste.

En la antigua Babilonia, y en las civilizaciones de Mesopotamia, Egipto e India, los hechiceros y los brujos ya eran devotos y usuarios, benéficos o maléficos, de los poderes de las piedras preciosas.

Existe la creencia de que las piedras preciosas de colores aplicadas con una técnica apropiada por expertos en la materia sobre los cuerpos humanos, hacen sentir sus efectos beneficiosos.

Según Hans Krofer, el color es poseedor de siete propiedades: curar, acrecentar la fuerza vital, estimular, dar claridad a la mente, fortalecer, inspirar y dar satisfacción.

Numerosos videntes, adivinos y futurólogos utilizan, recomiendan, y también venden directamente, gemas y minerales muy diversos, pero son muy escasas las afirmaciones concretas, y ninguna está inequívocamente fundamentada. Lo más sospechoso es que las indicaciones que se ofrecen, por lo general, ni siquiera están firmadas, ni se atribuyen a algún conocido personaje. Por otra parte, nos consta que los más famosos esotéricos, que reciben miles de llamadas en líneas de pago por atención 906, participan en programas televisivos y radiofónicos, publican consultorios y asesoran a numerosos clientes, en muchas ocasiones utilizan el resltado programas informáticos capaces de generar observaciones y comentarios mediante una lógica que evita las afirmaciones categóricas, y razona sobre vaguedades hasta llegar a conseguir la credibilidad, y las fuentes, que permite obtener información de quien se asesora, para asesorar mejor, y sobre todo, más caro. Cualquier experto en interrogatorios a testigos e imputados, y a los conocedores de ciertos perfiles fraudulentos y estafadores, fácilmente detecta de dónde vienen los datos que sirven de base para las frases más impactantes.

En la definición e interpretación de poderes de piedras, el análisis del texto, el contexto, el autor y el potencial receptor de las afirmaciones, es muy importante distinguir entre lo público y lo privado, lo general y lo particular, lo desinterasado y el negocio que participa del beneficio de la venta de gemas.

Alicia Galloti, en "El poder de los cristales", nos explica la energía que se encierra en el maravilloso vientre de un cristal, abierto a un inusitado mundo del color y de luz en el mundo mágico de los sueños donde la claridad y la oscuridad se funden, dueños de su poder. Las piedras como el diamante, el rubí, la esmeralda, el zafiro, el ámbar, el jade, todos los cuarzos, transmiten sus vibraciones y hablan del amor, de la suerte, de la esperanza, y de la vida con días más largos para vivirlos.

Matilde Suárez Troya ofrece su suerte en un cristal: "Misterio, fantasía y poder engendra el alma del cristal, fundidos en el sol, en la luz de las estrellas, en la deslumbrante magia de la luna, en el violeta de los crepúsculos. Busque usted su cristal según su signo y quien sabe, el amor, la suerte y la salud, todo aquello que el ser humano anhela para su vida, le llegue a manos llenas".

Rappel regala piedras raras, como la iolita con la que obsequió al Dioni tras comentarle su próspero futuro profesional, pero sólo pocos días antes de que fuera detenido por narcotráfico.

Una llamada a teléfonos 906 que publicitan algún saber sobre el poder de las gemas pronto evidencia la intención del profesional de conseguir tanta información como sea posible de quien realiza la llamada, muy especialmente de los motivos que tiene para haberla realizado, pero se dan muy pocos datos, y ninguna explicación creíble, o al menos verosimil. Lo menos recomendable es caer en el error de iniciar un estéril debate sobre esoterísmo mientras se está pagando bastante dinero por minuto de conversación.

No es difícil encontrar literatura descriptiva de las supuestas relaciones entre el zodiaco y las gemas, e incluso ciertas publicaciones semanales, o números especiales dedicados a la videncia como el de Diez Minutos para el 2.000, pero es poco frecuente que esté publicada con firma. Por este motivo reproducimos aquí una lista de signos, referenciando en itálica y (entre paténtesis) la gema que la Gran Guía de la Naturaleza sobre "Piedras preciosas y piedras finas", de Rupert Hochleitner recomienda para cada signo, seguida de una frase de Matilde Suárez Troya para cada signo, de manera que fácilmente pueden apreciarse coincidencias y diferencias. Así:

Aries (rubí), el signo del fuego interior recibe las vibraciones del rubí, del granate con su rojo sangre, de la amatista, jade, malaquita, topacio claro, turmalina sandía.

Tauro (esmeralda). El fiel, prudente y tenaz Tauro recibe la influencia de la aguamarina, lapislázuli con su hermoso color azul mar, el jade, berilo, esmeralda, circón, piedra de sangre.

Géminis (ónice, calcedonia negra). Versátil, cambiante, lleno de dualidades. A este signo le va bien el crisopacio, con un verde deslumbrante, la malaquita, el topacio del Brasil, zafiro, ojo de gato, ágata, turmalina sandía.

Cáncer (carneoloa, calcedonia transparente de color rojo a marrón). Signo de agua en que nace la vida, tiene la energía del crisopacio, esmeralda, la piedra lunar con sus cambios de color, el ópalo, la turmalina verde, la turquesa.

Leo (peridoto). Signo fuerte, seguro, independiente, vibra con el topacio, diamante con su extraordinaria multiplicación de la luz, berilo, ágata fuego, turmalina rosa, rubí.

Virgo (berilo). Su elemento, la tierra. Analiza, reflexiona, busca el misterio. Sus piedras son el ojo de gato, ágata, ágata musgoso, turquesa, turmalina, zafiro blanco, jade.

Libra (topacio). Signo de la armonía y el equilibrio, busca la justicia, sus piedras son el circón azul, jade verde, esmeralda, berilos claros, turmalina rosa, ópalo arlequinado, aguamarina.

Escorpión (crisoprasa, calcedonia verde con alguna transparencia). Signo complejo, puede atacar y destruir, pero también reconstruir y crear. Le va bien el poder del granate, la piedra de sangre, aventurina oscura, rubí, topacio, malaquita, piedra lunar.

Sagitario (circón). Accede al futuro, explora y transmite cultura, sus piedras: amatista, lapislázuli, zafiro azul, turmalina rosa, diamante, turquesa, azurista.

Capricornio (amatista). Introvertido, con muchos anhelos de triunfar. Sus piedras: el ónix, el ópalo irisado, ojo de gato, turmalina sandía, diamantes, crisopacio, jade.

Piscis (zafiro). Sensible, vulnerable, vive el mundo de las fantasías, recibe la Influencia del berilo verde, circón, aguamarina, aventurina verde, piedra lunar.

Según esta misma autora, "todos estos cristales están compuestos por millones de partículas y colores que los multiplica la luz; formados en el largo y paciente caminar del universo, con su entrega de vida a manos llenas".

Hemos buscado en Internet, y en inglés, este mismo tipo de información, y hemos encontrado que la misma lista se reproduce sin apenas variaciones en numerosas páginas publicadas en muy distintos y distantes dominios. Esta es la relación más frecuente:
 

Agate	A variety of chalcedony which often (but not always) exibits banded patterns, agate helps to cleanse and balance energies while eliminating negativity. It also strengthens the intellect and helps the user open to inspiration. According to lore, this stone also inspires fidelity, strengthens eyesight and helps to relieve thirst. Many forms of this versatile and widespread mineral exist. See also, Moss Agate.
Amber	With an energy like liquid sunshine, amber is the fossilized resin of pine trees. Amber is said to enhance the beauty of the wearer. It can be used to invoke solar powers such as wealth, success, attraction, vitality, joy or to add energetic power to your workings.
Amethyst	Cool and relaxing, amethyst is a purple variety of quartz crystal. It aids in spiritual quests and wearing it helps promote meditation, peace, tranquility and oneness with your spiritual goals. In ancient times it was said to be "proof against poison". We now know that amethyst is a "negative ion", which attracts poisonous "positive ions" to it, thus clearing the air around the wearer and helping to make it more breathable. Amethyst is also said to be a stone of sobriety, and can help the wearer become free of addictive tendencies.
Ametrine	A naturally occurring combination of amethyst and citrine, ametrine has the properties of both those stones. It helps promote balance between the spiritual and the material worlds, allowing the wearer to realize that "all is One". It cam be used to enhance cooperation, for balancing and a feeling of connectedness and clearing.
Aqua Aura Quartz	This is clear quartz which has been dipped in molten gold. The molecules of gold which adhere to the quartz give it an electric pale blue color. In addition to the properties of clear quartz and of gold, aqua aura works on the throat chakra, to promote communication and helps the wearer to channel. The stone displays an Aquarian energy, which gives inventiveness, the ability to respond to chaos and aids in humanitarian goals.
Aventurine	Most commonly pale to mossy green in color, aventurine radiates a calming energy. It is used in shielding the heart and in healing and balancing the emotions and the physical body. Aventurine further stimulates creativity, intellect and independence. It enhances leadership qualities allowing the wearer to act decisively, and strengthening intuitive power.
Black Onyx	This solid - feeling stone is excellent for grounding negativity and relieving stress. Onyx is soothing and helps in focus, to banish grief, change bad habits, and remove anxieties and fears.
Carnelian	Also known as "Sard", this stone generally ranges in color from pale tangerine to fiery orange red. Activating all the lower chakras, carnelian brings courage, passion and creativity. It helps to enhance physical energy and personal power and can protect the wearer from fear, rage and envy, while banishing sorrow. As it opens the heart, it brings joy, laughter and warmth.
Chrysoprase	The name of this apple-green variety of chalcedony is Greek for "golden leek". Its energy is bright and wholesome, opening the heart chakra, and bringing acceptance and an non-judgmental attitude. It aids in communication, allowing the wearer to speak with compassion and from the heart.
Chrysocolla	This sky-blue mineral helps in give strength in areas communication and self - expression . It helps the wearer know when to speak and when not to, and to release anger and other negative emotions. It's energy is stabilizing. An excellent stone for the process of negating misunderstanding and rebuilding relationships.
Citrine	A yellow variety of quartz crystal, citrine radiates a bright and cheery energy. Citrine can occur naturally (beginning as amethyst, which is heat-treated within Mother Earth). Sadly, much commercially available citrine is formed through irradiation, which can harm the energies of the stone. When choosing citrine, look for a stone which feels alive and vibrant in your hands. It is used for wealth, communication, fresh starts and in balancing the solar plexus chakra and can help the wearer to dispel anger and radiate joy.
Diamond	Radiating purity and indestructibility, diamonds symbolize the central sun within us and the perfection of our Higher Selves. Diamonds aid in trust, confidence and purification. Because they flash all colors, they can help us to align with the Universal All. They also help to bring strength and endurance to the energies of other stones.
Emerald	This very precious green stone opens the heart chakra, bringing harmony, sensitivity and loyalty and allowing for "right action." Its fragility reminds us that the hearts of other can be fragile as well, and helps us to be gentle with those around us. Because of its rarity and great cost (as well as it's green color) it is also useful in wealth magick.
Fluorite	Though it grows in many colors, fluorite is most common in purple and green. It grows in a very ordered crystaline structure, and works to bring stability and order into the wearer's life as well. A third eye stone, this is an excellent choice for meditation, allowing the user to more easily acheive silence within and to find the place where all knowledge is accessible. An aid in study and intellectual pursuits, it helps to increase concentration, and allow clear and detatched reasoning. Fluorite also attracts the faeries, and planting this stone at the four corners of your yard can aid in creating a Faery Garden -- just watch out, those faeries can be mischevious!
Garnet	Working through the Root Chakra, garnet helps to stabilize and protect the physical body. A red stone, it is especially effective with the blood, spine and circulatory system, and helps some women to balance during "Moontime". Garnet aids in raising and directing the flow of kundalini energy and in enhancing and balancing the sex drive. On the mental, emotiona, and spiritual planes, garnet also aids in acheiving integration and rejuvenation, and in learning to flow with the tides of energy. It gives vitality and provides a stablilzing influence in all realms.
Gold	Traditionally a symbol of masculine and solar energies, gold draws the light of the Sun into the wearer, bringing vitality and confidence. Its energy is active and mobilizing, helping to turn goal into reality. It can be used in matters of wealth, manifestation, self - confidence, purification, attracting honors and to stabilize and energize the properties of gemstones. It enhances joy and a positive outlook.
Hematite	The root "hem/o" means "blood". When ground or cut, this blackish grey metallic stone forms a reddish powder. Hematite forms a reflective shield around the wearer, letting negativity bounce off and return to the sender. Wearers should remember however, that their own negativity will be reflected to them if they are its source. It is therefore a "lesson stone", teaching the aware to release and ground their negativity. It is also said to aid in mental attunement, memory enhancement and in disorders of the blood.
Jade	Sacred to both the Chinese and the Mayans, this solid - looking moss - green stone is said to bless everything it touches. Often used to carve sacred artifacts, such as statues of the Gods, it facilitates wisdom, peace and harmony and devotion to Purpose. Said to be a "dream-stone", jade placed under one's pillow will help in lucid dreaming. It aids in finding one's path and manifesting dreams into reality.
Jet	Similar to coal, jet is a form of fossilized wood, and is always black. Jet helps protect the wearer from fear and grounds negativity. Worried or edgy? Try running your hands through a bowl full of jet chips. It is also helpful in stabilizing finances, and is said to soothe migraines.
Kyanite	This fibrous blue stone aligns and helps to open the chakras. It brings calming and stimulates psychism and intuiton Kyanite is an excellent meditation stone which facilitates getting into the meditative state. It is useful in astral travel and dream work.
Labradorite	Related to moonstone, this grey feldspar exhibits a display of spectral colors in flares of blue, red and gold. Labradorite helps one understand the destiny they have chosen in this lifetime. The stone aids in translating intuitive feeling into thought so that the wearer can implement the messages they receive. It enhances inner knowing, patience and psychic as well as mental ability and helps to release judgement. It also helps provide a link to the "darker" Crone aspects of feminine deity.
Lapis Lazuli	Sacred to the Goddess Isis, this deep blue stone was prized by the Ancient Egyptians and holds the energy of a star - studded sky, limitless in its wisdom. Lapis provides mental clarity and objectivity; it assists in awaking the third eye. It can be used to expand intellect, wisdom awareness and intuition. The stone is also believed to shield the wearer from psychic attack.
Lepidolite	This lavender mica works on all the upper chakras helping to learn to receive joy and love, and to face our transformations with open hearts and minds and to re-birth us into the spiritual.
Malachite	This is a dense stone of light and darker green whorls and striations. It has a grounding earthy energy. Malachite can be used in healing work and in opening the heart chakra. It enhances fidelity, practicality and nurturing and aids the wearer on their journey of evolution.
Moldavite	A mossy green stone of meteoric origin, this stone is found only in Czechoslovakia. It is a very high frequency stone and can cause some wearers to feel a bit spacey. Moldavite stimulates connection to the stars and opens the heart to the Universal All. It provides expanded mental vision, assists in meditation, in aligning self to Higher Purpose and in healing the heart and body. This stone is especially enhanced by setting it in gold.
Moonstone	Traditionally a stone of feminine and lunar energy, this stone ranges from white to nearly clear, and exhibits a bluish chatoyancy. It has a reflective, calming energy. Moonstone can be used for all lunar workings, for intuition, balancing the emotions, harmonizing with the natural cycles of life and of the body, psychic perception and wishes. It aids in attuning with feminine wisdom and with Goddess energy. Apricot Moonstone: Working in much the same way as "normal" moonstone, the color of this gem adds sensuality, and gentle passion. The color reminds me of the enchanted feeling I get when the Full Moon is huge and orange and low on the horizon. Grey Moonstone: This version of moonstone is quieting and calm, granting the releasing energy of the waning moon.
Morion Quartz	This is a very rare black quartz. It is formed through natural radiation, from growing near uranium deposits. Morion itself is not radioactive and is safe to carry. When exposed to light for extended time they fade from black to grey. "Morions" were a type of helmet used around the time of the Conquistadors, which speaks to the stone's protective and shielding qualities. They can be used in shadow work, releasing obstacles, grounding, coping with grief, and for connecting with the "darker" faces of the deity, such as the Crone and Hunter archetypes.
Moss Agate	A white and green variety of agate that exibits a pattern much like moss growing in cracks of stone. This mineral works to balance the emotions, heal the heart and enhance positive outlook. It can also be used to enhance plant growth and to grow wealth. See also Agate.
Opal	Called the "Rainbow Stone," the most common color for opal is a milky white which flashes with spectral color in blues, reds and greens, however opals can be red, black or many other colors. There are those who consider opal an "unlucky" stone. This may be because of the fact that opal can stimulate change to occur in your life - if you are not prepared for this, it may be better to chose another stone. If you are prepared for a change, opal can help to catalyze this, causing opportunities for growth to spring up around you. Opal is used to awaken psychic perception and mystical awareness, it strengthens memory and aids in dreaming and can encourage flashes of insight.
Pearl	Historically symbolic of purity, innocence and faith, pearls enhance personal integrity and help clear the mind so that it can be a clean channel for wisdom and spiritual guidance. These Moon and water ruled "gems" enhance sincerity, truth and loyalty and bring calming reflection.
Peridot	This olive green stone has a quiet, refreshing energy. It assists in inner growth and emotional evolution and helps the wearer recognize and change negative patterns. It is used in clearing the heart and solar plexus chakras; allowing the wearer to release fear, jealousy and ego. Because it acts to seal the aura, it is suggested that peridot be removed while working on chakras other than the heart and solar plexus.
Psilomelane	Exhibiting stripes of black and silver in a whorling pattern that looks like watered silk or damascus steel, psilomelane helps the wearer analyze and transform their emotional patterns. It is used in trance work, meditation, gazing and mental/astral travel, but these should be consciously directed (The user should state where they want to go: "I want to visit my mother's house." or "I'd like information on how to heal my co-dependency.") to achieve the best results.
Quartz	Raidiating the white light energy of the Universe, clear quartz crystal can be used in any workings. When in doubt or when lacking the "correct" type of stone, quartz can always substitute. This mineral amplifies, focuses and stores energy and information. It can be used to clear and activate the chakras, for purification, healing, in meditation and trance work, to dispel negativity, enhance and seal the aura and for many other uses. Wearing quartz with the point facing upwards, opens the upper chakras, and facilitates meditative states and psychic awareness, but can leave the wearer feeling somewhat spacey, so it is not recommended for prolonged duration. Wearing it point downwards helps to ground. A double-terminated crystal (one with a point on either end) worn horizontally can help balance left/right brain. Vertically, a double-terminator can help incorporate both the spiritual and the material into the wearer's life. The many configurations and types of quartz crystal are too numerous to list here.
Rose Quartz	Lending a soft, healing energy, rose quartz aids the wearer in acheiving self-love and in enhancing the love vibration in relationships. Rose quartz brings trust, calm, clarity and harmony, and reduces the feeling of a need for haste. It removes fears and anxiety and reduces stress. It balances the emotions and heals emotional wounds, allowing the user to tap into the knowledge that the Universe is Love. Care is advised when using this stone, however, as it is reported to increase fertility.
Rutilated Quartz	This quartz contains fine, needle-like inclusions of golden mineral. It stimulates change and helps in finding insight into the root of a situation.
Ruby	A powerful and energetic red stone, ruby has been used for many purposes over the centuries. It helps maintain courage, shields and protects the wearer on all levels, and brings lucidity and gentleness of thought and action. Ruby aleviates distress, and confused imaginings and brings the light of the Universe into the darkened recesses of the soul. It helps to cleanse and redirect trapped energy, working on both the heart and root chakras.
Sapphire	Most commonly, sapphire occurs as a deep blue translucent stone. It stimulates the throat and third eye chakras, and assists in calming, healing, communication, mental pursuits, enhancing intuition and in wealth matters.
Silver	Traditionally a symbol of feminine and lunar energies, silver draws the light of the Moon into the wearer. Silver calms and balances the emotions and helps the wearer to reflect on their situation, allowing them to trust in their higher self. It aids in spiritual pursuits, psychic perception, intuition, subtle magnetism, dispelling negativity and bringing secrets to light. It has a relaxed, reflective energy and can enhance and empower stones that are placed with it. While gold radiates energy outward, silver's action changes the person from within.
Snowflake Obsidian	This volcanic rock shows snowflake like inclusions of a white mineral. It's energy is restful and serene. Snowflake obsidian can help the wearer recognize and transmute negative patterns and modes of thought. It helps to transform negativity into a positive and brings peace and balance to mind and body.
Smokey Quartz	This brownish to smokey grey variety of quartz works to dissolve and release negativity and emotional blockages. Its energy is gentle but sustaining and stabilizing. It clears both the emotions and the mind, helps the wearer to ground, lifts depression, provides clarity and enhances positive energies and attention to the moment.
Sugilite	Occurring in shades from deep purple to violet pink, sugilite assists in connecting the spiritual to the physical. It opens the chakras and allows for the movement of Kundalini energy. It aids in understanding of the spiritual reasons for the lessons we encounter, enhances belief in self, eliminates hostility and provides loving comfort from the Universe.
Tiger Eye	A banded mineral composed of Tiger Eye, Red Jasper and Hematite, Tiger Iron stimulates the vitality and may enhance the immune system. It promotes courage and can be utilized as a protective shield.
Tiger Iron	A banded mineral composed of Tiger Eye, Red Jasper and Hematite, Tiger Iron stimulates the vitality and may enhance the immune system. It promotes courage and can be utilized as a protective shield.
Topaz	These crystals range from yellow to golden-orange and brown. Topaz removes negativity, transforming it to joy and enhances individuality and creativity. It improves the intellect, promotes health and wealth; and gives the wearer the impetus to act on their dreams, thus bringing them into materialization.
Tourmalinated Quartz	Clear quartz with needle-like inclusions of black or dark green tourmaline, this stone helps to ground negativity. An excellent shield stone, its action is to first strengthen and enhance energy sent at it, and then to deflect it back to its sender, so that the sender receives many-fold of what they put out. As with hematite, when utilizing the stone for that purpose, the wearer must be cautious not to be the source of their own negativity. Optionally, the user may program the stone to have negativity transmute to positive energy which increases the well-being of the wearer rather than returning it to its source. In addition, tourmalinated quartz aids to balance male and female energies, remove negative conditioning patterns and balance extremes.
Tourmaline	Occurring in many color varieties, tourmaline helps to balance both sides of the brain and the body centers, to promote understanding and self confidence, to release "victim consciousness" and to promote the awakening of the spirit.
Black Tourmaline	This stone deflects and grounds negativity, reduces anxiety and depression, and increases vitality.
Green Tourmaline	This variety works at opening the heart chakra and providing compassion. It is also used to inspire creativity, to attract success and to increase prosperity and abundance.
Pink Tourmaline	Another variety of tourmaline which works on the heart chakra. It is suggested by some that men use green tourmaline while women should use pink. (I personally am inclined to feel that each person has both masculine and feminine within, and that either sex can utilize these stones.) Pink tourmaline allows the wearer to trust in the power of love, to release destructive tendencies and to gain peace, awareness and understanding.
Rubelite Tourmaline	A deep pink to wine-red variety, rubelite tourmaline stimulates vitality and physical energy. It aids to release co-dependency, stimulating independence and creativity, and helps the wearer to experience love from a perspective of wholeness.
Watermelon Tourmaline	With a green rind around a red or pink core, this stone activates the heart chakra and gives the wearer a joyous and humorous outlook into their situations. It releases guilt and inspires cooperation and tact.
Turquoise	This sky-blue to green stone is sacred to both Native American and Oriental traditions. It brings the energy of the sky down to earth.
